He completed conducting studies in Sofia and Berlin, as well as master classes with world-renowned conductors.
He has impressive performances on three continents. He has conducted dozens of ensembles in numerous countries, in cultural centers such as Zurich, Berlin, London, Vienna, Boston, Tokyo, Singapore, Los Angeles, Frankfurt, Munich, and others. He is a laureate of international conducting competitions, including “Gustav Mahler,” “Jorma Panula,” and “Alliance London.”
He was unanimously elected General Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Opera and Philharmonic Orchestra in Heidelberg (the first and only foreigner elected to this position in the history of the cultural center). He was also elected General Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Croatian National Theatre Ivan pl. Zajc in Rijeka – European Capital of Culture for 2020.
He is a co-founder and member of the Association of General Music Directors and Principal Conductors in Germany.
He is the co-founder of the Yordan Kamdzhalov Foundation, established to support the development of young Bulgarian talents and which has grown into a conceptual cultural platform. He is the initiator and creator of the Choir of the Music Laboratory for the Human Self, the Ensemble of the Music Laboratory for the HumanSelf, as well as the “Bulgaria Sings” format. He is the Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the GENESIS ORCHESTRA.
He has made numerous recordings for leading record companies such as EDEL and CPO Records. Albums under his baton have received prestigious European nominations, such as “Recording of the Year” from Opus Klassik, Berlin, as well as the prestigious “Echo Klassik” award, Hamburg.
Maestro Yordan Kamdzhalov’s tireless creative activity continues as a co-founder, musical director, and principal conductor of the International Music Academy and Festival “Boris Christoff” in Italy. His commitment to education is also expressed in educational and creative collaborations with institutions on three continents, such as Heidelberg University, Raffles Institution Singapore, Università di Bologna, Harvard University, and Sofia University.
NASA and the Minor Planet Center have named asteroid 52292 – Kamdzhalov after him.
Maestro Kamdzhalov is the founder, Artistic Director, and Principal Conductor of the “Strive” Festival, dedicated to the musical future of Bulgaria, and the “Kamdzhalov” Festival in the Rose Valley, whose first edition will take place in July of this year.
Yordan Kamdzhalov is the founder and head of the Academy for the Human Self – an interdisciplinary educational center in the fields of science, art, and sports.
The scope of Yordan Kamdzhalov’s cultural and educational responsibilities gained new dimensions at the beginning of 2025 when he assumed the position of Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the educational structures Private Primary School and Kindergarten “Strive”.
Furthermore, in 2025, he is expected to have international conducting engagements in Italy, Germany, the USA, and other countries.
